Basil is a permanent crop with a gross profitability of 100 coins every 10 hours, which makes it one of the more profitable crops in the market. However, it belongs to no particular category of seed — fruit, vegetable, or flower — and thus cannot be used to satisfy the requirements of the Flower Power, Vegetable Virtuoso, or Foremost Fruit Farmer ribbons.

A farmer must be at least level 48 to grow basil. Each plot planted generates 1 XP upon planting. After mastery, the crop has a low mastery bonus of 1, but a relatively high 20% chance of receiving that additional 1 XP. Thus, mastery offers the farmer a decent chance of making XP on both the planting and harvesting side of the maturation cycle, even if the crops are not fertilized.

As of July 2010, it is not a part of any Co-Op Farming job, but it is used extensively in various higher level crafting projects. The winery, spa, and bakery all use basil for at least one recipe.

The word "basil" comes from the Greek word meaning "king," making Basil the King of the Herbs.

An alternative interpretation of "basil" is not "King of the Herbs", but "the Herb of the Kings".
