Part 1

First, a snap shot is what's in front of a camera. A photograph is what is in your mind's eye.

Go out and take a few photographs! Try and capture something that is in your mind.

Part 2

Once you've got your idea, the most important thing to consider is your composition and framing.

Remember never put your smack in the middle. It is a boring composition.

Part 3

Climb, hit the deck or crouch. You need to get interesting angles. Your POV must interest your viewer.

Photography means painting with light. You need to learn to work with light

Study film exposure well to get great photos in the field.

Part 5

Focus is very important. Doesn't mean everything should be pin sharp. Keep the subject isolated.

Use a shallow depth of field to your advantage and learn focus pulling well.

Part 6

Don't ever use flash head on. It'll give you a flat image. Worse, it'll startle the animals.

Use soft boxes and directional flash for a decent fill light.

Control your breathing. You'll have to develop steady hands to take good photos.

When you need to shoot really small animals, you'll need the steady as a rock.

Part 8

Its easier to carry two different cameras than to swap lenses in the field.

When you need to take a call, always give depth of field priority.

Part 9

You'll need to learn to predict animal behaviour. You need to focus on an area before the animal gets there. Auto-focus isn't always reliable.

Always keep lens hoods handy. Stray light always ruins good photographs.

Keep spare batteries ready. Carry extras.
